ACCESS UBB – “Learning to care, caring to learn”

Posted on 22 January 2015 by Marian Padure

To donate we invite you to enter the platform Crowdfunding @ UBB

Support our projects for the Cluj academic community!

“Learning to care, care for learning” – under this motto operates the Office for Students with Disabilities (http://bsd.centre.ubbcluj.ro/ro/) of the Babeș-Bolyai University, a unique structure at national level, which facilitates and supports the inclusion of students with diverse learning needs in university life. With the help of UBB student and alumni volunteers, BSD has so far carried out a series of social accessibility actions (information, training for independent living), which placed UBB in the finals of the National Gala of People with Disabilities 2014, in the section Open Doors – Institutions promoting accessibility.

At Babeș-Bolyai University there are currently about 150 students with different disabilities, 60% of whom have motor disabilities. Through this project, BSD aims to make as many spaces of the UBB as physically accessible as possible, a process that depends on each of us. We need your contribution to the process of ensuring a barrier-free University, not only in terms of mentality and attitudes, but also in terms of physically accessible spaces for people with disabilities.

The funds raised with your help in this crowdfunding campaign will be used for:

  1. Inclusion of UBB premises on the Accessibility Map (www.accesibil.org), a unique nationwide electronic map containing information about the degree of accessibility for wheelchair users. The physical accessibility process involves the purchase of modern telescopic mobile ramps that are optimal for wheelchair users and can be installed on request without requiring architectural modifications to UBB buildings.
  2. Production of a video training guide on accessibility in the university environment “UniAccess” (best practices) for UBB teaching and administrative staff, in collaboration with the Disability Office of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, the oldest office of its kind in Europe.

The estimated funds needed to achieve the objective are:

  1. 7000 lei – purchase of mobile telescopic ramps. In the first phase, ramps will be purchased for the buildings of the Faculties with the highest number of students with motor disabilities, as well as for the buildings most used by students;
  2. 2500 lei – production of the Uni Access Video Guide – costs of travelling international experts and preparation of video material.

Total: 9500 lei.
