Babeș-Bolyai University Accessibility Program
Babeș-Bolyai University is in a constant process of adapting its buildings and campus spaces to become more accessible, in accordance with the national building legislation [Normative on the adaptation of civil buildings and urban space to the individual needs of people with disabilities (NP 051-2012)]. Our aim is to ensure free and comfortable access for all members of the academic community, including students with disabilities and special educational needs. In addition to adapting the external built environment, we also focus on making our teaching and accommodation spaces accessible to facilitate a complete and integrated educational experience. These accessibility measures are being implemented gradually, depending on the space available in each building, priorities identified for urgent needs, and available budget allocations. We are committed to making these improvements carefully and responsibly, so that each step brings added accessibility and inclusion to our campus.
To support inclusivity, all university buildings are in the process of being equipped with accessibility essentials such as:
- parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities, located as close as possible to the main entrances to facilitate quick and comfortable access.
- It should be noted that these spaces can only be provided on university-owned space, and in most cases accessible parking spaces are public property, managed in cooperation with local authorities.
- access ramps at entrances, allowing easy movement for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users.
- accessible toilets, adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities in accordance with the regulations.
- Interior elevators and raised platforms to facilitate access to all levels of the buildings.
- a strategically placed assistance button to request help or information..
- Digital guidance system (Step-Hear) to guide blind people.
- Tactile door indicators and tactile way-finding mats to make it easier to navigate inside buildings.
- Communication system for the hearing impaired in interaction areas such as secretarial areas for effective communication.
- SOS button in the building and panic button in accessible restrooms for increased safety and emergency assistance.
- Tactile maps in large buildings to help visually impaired people with orientation.
These accessibility measures are being progressively implemented on campus and all faculty buildings. The University continues to invest in ensuring a inclusive, safe and comfortable for all in accordance with NP 051-2012 standards.
Accessibility facilities in Babeș-Bolyai University buildings and campus
Facilitățile de accesibilitate disponibile la Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai includ:
- reserved parking spaces: located near the main entrances, these spaces are dedicated to people with disabilities, facilitating quick and comfortable access to the building.
- access ramp: a ramped entrance allowing easy access for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users, positioned at the entrance to the building or inside;
- assistance button: located at the entrance or at strategic points, this button facilitates the summoning of a security guard who can provide immediate assistance in orientation or access;
- raised platform: a movable platform that helps people with motor disabilities to access upper floors;
- tactile mats: these tactile strips, placed on the floor, provide tactile guidance for people with visual impairments, pointing them in the building;
- interior elevator: standard elevator providing easy access between floors;
- accessible toilet: a toilet specially equipped to facilitate use by people with disabilities, with adequate space for wheelchairs and other specific facilities in accordance with the rules in force;
- panic button in the toilet: located in toilets intended for disabled people, this button can be used in an emergency to call for immediate help;
- Step-Hear: anaudio-guide system that provides voice instructions to blind people to help them find their way around; a mobile phone is required, which must be aplicația Step-Hear; mobile data and Bluetooth must be activated; Download the free app from APP Store or Google Play;
- Tactile indicator on the door: Braille and tactile text plaques on doors, providing information about the space;
- SOS button in the building: an emergency button placed at strategic points that allows help to be summoned immediately in case of need;
- Tactile map: a three-dimensional, tactile representation of the surroundings, which gives blind and partially-sighted people an understanding of the spatial layout to help them find their way around.
